Rights and permissions

Items from the NSW State archives collection are available under several different rights categories.

Copyright:

This means that the work is under current Copyright restrictions. This means that it may not be reproduced, communicated or copied (other than for the purposes of fair dealing, as defined in the Copyright Act 1968) without the Copyright holder’s permission. The NSW State Government does not hold copyright in material provided by private individuals (such as letters) and other governments.

No known Copyright:

This means that State Records is unaware of any current copyright restrictions on the material. This can be because the term of copyright has expired or that copyright does not apply to this type of work. The majority of images with ‘no known Copyright’  are images were Crown copyright has expired. Many of these are being made available  through The Commons on Flickr.

Creative Commons, Non-Commercial, No Derivatives, with Attribution:

This licence is used on some parts of our website. Examples are our own finding aid material such as Archives In Brief. This licence means that you can republish this material for any non-commercial purpose as long as you attribute back State Records NSW as the source and that you do not modify the work in any way. A more detailed explanation of this licence is available from Creative Commons.
