Series: NRS 12191, A general index to printed convict indents arranged by year under the letters of the alphabet, listing male and female prisoners separately. It provides details of name, ship, place of trial, sentence and folio.

Convict Indents, 1788-1842

Format: Microfiche 614-744 (set of 131)
The starting point for any convict research is the convict indent, which is the list of convicts transported to New South Wales on a particular ship. The early indents only provide name, date and place of trial and sentence. Later indents contain more information such as a physical description, native place, age and crime. The indents may also contain numbers of tickets of leave, pardons or certificates of freedom as well as details of any further crimes committed in the colony.

Registers of convicts' applications to marry, 1825-51

Format: Microfiche 780-802 (set of 23)
Series: NRS 12212, In the early years of the Colony, most marriages followed the publication of banns in a church on three successive Sundays. Convicts were married by banns having first sought official permission.

Assignment Registers, 1821-24

Format: Microfiche 745-48 (set of 4)
Series: NRS 12193, The register shows date of bond, to whom assigned, residence, prisoner's name, ship, occupation, date of payment, commencing date and cause of return and occasionally, additional observations. Index is included.

Register of Tickets of Leave, 1824-27

Format: Microfiche 752-54 (set of 3)
Series: NRS 12200, This is a record of tickets of leave copied from the ticket of leave butts which provides roughly the same information about ticket-holders as the butts.
The registers provide the following information: the prisoner's number, name, ship and date of arrival, place of conviction, term of sentence, native place, 'calling', height, complexion, colour of eyes and hair, date of ticket, district he is confined to, and any 'general remarks'.

Registers of convicts recommended for Conditional Pardons, 1826-56

Format: Microfiche 824-35 (set of 12)
Series: NRS 1173, The first two volumes contain the following information about the individual convict: number and date of pardon; name; ship; master; year of arrival; native place, trade or calling; offence; sentence; year of birth; height, complexion, colour of hair and eyes, and general remarks, together with details of who recommended him and the result of the application. The last volume only notes name, number and ship of arrival with occasional other details.

Convict Deaths, 1828-79

Format: Microfiche 749-51 (set of 3)
Series: NRS 12213, This register was used to record the deaths of convicts who died whilst still serving their sentence. It records name, ship of arrival, age, date of burial, parish and occasionally other details relating to convicts whose deaths were reported to the Principal Superintendent of Convicts (until 1855), and subsequently the Inspector General of Police. Entries are arranged alphabetically, and then within each letter by the date of death in chronological order.

Tickets of Exemption from Government labour, 1827-32

Format: Microfiche 1001-6 (set of 6) - includes an index
Series: NRS 12196, The butts of the tickets of exemption are the office record of the ticket of exemption which was given to the recipient as proof of his status. They generally provide quite detailed information about each convict receiving a ticket, such as: number and date, and name of the convict; name of ship, master and year of arrival; religion; native place; trade or calling; offence, place of trial, date of trial and sentence; year of birth; height, complexion, colour of hair and eyes, and other distinguishing features (such as tattoos and scars); name of relation with whom the convict was to reside (if applicable); district for which the ticket of exemption was valid.

Series: NRS 12197, The Registers are much more of a summary record and have been included for the sake of completeness. Number of the ticket of exemption, name of convict, ship and year of arrival are always recorded; residence, information concerning relations, notation that the ticket is a duplicate, changes in the district for which the ticket of exemption was valid, and information concerning relevant correspondence can be provided.
