The Railway Personal History Cards has proved to be a very popular record series with our readers. Our hope is that by offering this service it will assist those of you who cannot personally visit the Western Sydney Records Centre with your research.
What you can find in the records
The Railway Personal History Cards are located at:
NRS 12922, Personal History Cards - Employees born before 1900
They detail the service history of State Rail employees born before 1900. The cards were kept by the Finance Branch to record rates of pay, leave, and superannuation entitlements. Details on the cards can include educational qualifications, and details of service.
Most cards relate to permanent employees, but some cards for construction and casual employees are also included. Cards do not exist for those whose employment had ceased prior to the introduction of the Railway Service Superannuation Act, 1 October 1910.
Information you need to provide
In order for us to copy the correct card/s we need you to provide specific information. The most important details we need for each entry are name (in full) and the date or year of birth. If we do not receive this information we cannot proceed with your order.
In carrying out your own research most of you would be aware of the many common names that exist in the records. For this reason we need to have as much detail about the person's name as you can provide. For instance, looking for the name Richard Boyd Thompson is more accurate than, R Thompson. In fact, we may not be able to identify the record you requested if we only had this information.
You must provide:
- Name in full (include middle name if known), and
- Date or year of birth - this will help staff to identify the correct card
Additional information may also be of assistance, such as:
- Place of work (if known) e.g. Newcastle, or
- Branch (if known)
If you have provided insufficient information you will be contacted and your money will be refunded.
What if there is no card?
If no card exists matching the particulars of the rail employee a partial refund will be made.
- $14.00 refund for the first entry
- $5.00 refund for each additional entry
The $11.00 administration fee will still be charged if no card is located.
Placing you order
The fee for this service is $25.00 which includes the copies for the first entry, the administrative fee and postage/handling. Additional entries are $5.00 each. Overseas orders incur an additional $3.65 postage charge.
We accept Visa and MasterCard. Cheques or money orders should be made payable to State Records. We do not accept personal cheques from foreign banks. Express postage is available on request, extra charges will apply.
