Top of Short Guide 6 - Department of Education Subject files, 1875-1948 About this guide

State Records' Short Guides are designed to provide easy reference to record series relating to a particular subject or area of research. This guide provides a list of the Department of Education Subject files, 1875-1948. It was previously published as Information Leaflet 24. It has since been edited and updated with the CGS (Concise Guide Series) number. This new means of identifying records is based on the Australian archival standard 'series system'. The number will in due course be migrated to the State Records Control System.

This will mean that published citations of State archives will remain valid after the relevant archives have been converted to the new system of control. In time, these series numbers will replace the old 'stroke' reference numbers used in previous publications.

These files deal with the administration of the Education Department and matters relating to education generally. The files have been brought together into subject bundles by the Education Department and are arranged roughly alphabetically. The subjects covered are diverse, ranging from routine administrative matters to policy issues. The correspondence is incomplete for many subjects however; some subjects are covered in some detail, for example Parents and Citizens Associations, Schools of Arts and Teachers' Colleges.

The Education Department Subject files, 1875-1948 are open to public access.

The records listed in this Guide are held at the Western Sydney Records Centre. We do not transfer State archives between offices.
