About education and training opportunities
Education and training in recordkeeping is relevant to all records and archives workers in the NSW public sector. Undertaking further education is a means to advance your position, improve your skills and learn more about recordkeeping in today's rapidly evolving business environment. Whether you have learnt 'on-the-job' or already hold a formal qualification, there are a wide array of opportunities available for furthering your knowledge or obtaining additional qualifications.
In addition to the courses and other opportunities listed below, State Records offers a comprehensive program of short course training. While these courses do not provide a specific qualification, they are designed to give participants practical and comprehensive knowledge of records management requirements and tools in the NSW public sector. Descriptions of all courses offered and dates are included in the current training course calendar.
Australian National University
ANU offers a program designed for people in government agencies called the 'System Approach to Management of Government Information'. This program focuses on recordkeeping and data management.
As of 2008, the first modules being offered are:
- Data Mining and Matching
- Electronic Document Management
- Technology and Innovation Management
- Materials Science & Technology for Managing Records and Archives (Part 2)
- Information and Public Administration
This program is offered on a fee for service basis and modules can be taken individually.

Edith Cowan University offers the following courses:
- Executive Certificate in Records Management - this course provides an alternative entry opportunity for students who do not have an undergraduate degree and are therefore not eligible for admission to either the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma
- Graduate Certificate in Information Services- this course constitutes a first award in recordkeeping studies at graduate level
- Graduate Diploma of Science (Information Services) - Archives and Records Stream - this one year course, accredited by the Australian Society of Archivists (ASA) and Records Management Association of Australia (RMAA) requires a three year undergraduate degree as the minimum entrance requirement
- Master of Information Services (Archives and Records Stream)
Some courses can be studied full-time or part-time in external study mode, and include electronic recordkeeping modules.

Esset Australia
Esset Australia is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) under the Australian Quality Training Framework.
Esset Australia offers the following records management courses:
- BSB30401 Certificate III in Business (Recordkeeping) - an introductory training course for people who wish to work as records officers
- BSB40301 Certificate IV in Business (Recordkeeping) - for people who wish to work as administrators of records systems
- BSB50301 Diploma of Business (Recordkeeping) - this course is suitable for experienced records management professionals or those seeking to be records administrators, records supervisors or information managers.
- BSB 60101 Advanced Diploma of Business (Recordkeeping) - this course is suitable for experienced records management professionals or those seeking to be records administrators, records supervisors or information managers.
Courses are delivered through the a blended learning pathway involving on-the job training, print based distance materials and e-learning materials.

Monash University Victoria
Caulfield School of Information Technology
Monash University offers a Master of Information Management and Systems (MIMS) degree course with a specialisation in recordkeeping. This program of study is recognised by both the Records Management Association of Australia (RMAA) and the Australian Society of Archivists (ASA).
Graduate diploma and graduate certificate programs in recordkeeping are also available and PhD programs are offered.
Full or part time study can be undertaken, and all courses are offered via distance education or on campus.

- Graduate Certificate in Business Information Management has four specialisations and provides an alternative entry point for students who do not have an undergraduate degree but do have five years of employment history in a relevant field. Specialisations include Enterprise Concepts and Knowledge Management; Records Management; Preservation and Archival Management; and Library Management (continues into a Graduate Certificate and Master in Library and Information Management).

Professional associations
The Australian Society of Archivists (ASA) and the Records Management Association of Australia (RMAA) offer a number of resources and opportunities that contribute to ongoing professional development.
Australian Society of Archivists
The ASA hosts a range of professional development events, including its annual conference, special interest group meetings, seminars and state and territory based monthly branch meetings. The Society also issues two issues of its journal, Archives and Manuscripts, each year and four issues of the ASA Bulletin. See the ASA website for more information.
The ASA also employs a part-time education officer who can provide advice on courses, workshops and opportunities.
Records Management Association of Australia
The RMAA hosts a range of professional development events, including its annual conference, seminars and state and territory based monthly branch meetings. See the RMAA website for more information.
RMAA product directory
The RMAA also publishes the Records Management Product Directory on its website. A number of the consultants listed in this directory provide short course records management training. See the Product Directory for more information on these training providers.
Informaa Quarterly
Informaa Quarterly is a publication of the RMAA. Informaa is distributed four times a year to all members of the RMAA. It features in-depth articles on records management issues and keeps members up to date with the activities of the association.
Each November, Informaa Quarterly focusses on education and training opportunities for records managers. See the RMAA website for more information about joining the RMAA and obtaining Informaa Quarterly.
