Compiling and Implementing a Keyword Thesaurus

This course provides participants with an understanding of the key steps in analysing business functions and activities to develop a business classification scheme and keyword thesaurus.  Participants examine the building blocks of thesaurus construction and find out how to follow a step by step approach to approach to thesaurus compilation. Implementation and review and management strategies for keyword thesauri will also be discussed.

Learner profile

This course is suitable for NSW public sector personnel who are responsible for the development of a records management thesaurus. Prior experience with using a thesaurus is expected and classification experience would be an advantage. 

Prerequisites

Participants are expected to have prior experience with using a thesaurus and a knowledge of classification.  Each participant is required to bring a copy of their most recent Annual Report and Corporate or Business Plan in order to  undertake the compilation exercise.

Course outcomes

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • develop a business classification scheme using the methodology for the design and implementation of recordkeeping systems (the 'DIRKS' methodology)
  • identify the steps and building blocks used to compile a thesaurus
  • construct a thesaurus linked to a business classification scheme
  • compile thesaurus terms and relationships
  • describe strategies for implementing a classification system in an organisation, and
  • review and manage a classification scheme and  thesaurus over time.

Course content

This course is comprised of the following sessions:

  • framework for compiling and implementing
  • analysis and identification of functions and activities
  • developing a business classification scheme
  • developing scope notes
  • from BCS to thesaurus
  • thesaurus construction
  • implementing keyword classification, and
  • thesaurus review and amendment.

Related courses

Using a Keyword Thesaurus teaches participants on how to use an existing thesaurus to classify documents, create file titles and index records.
