This course gives participants the ability to develop a business classification scheme and identify recordkeeping requirements in line with the 'DIRKS' methodology. They then learn how to use this information to develop a functional retention and disposal authority and become familiar with the process for submitting a FRDA to State Records for approval.
Learner profile
Designed for records managers and other people responsible for developing a functional retention and disposal authority. This course is not suitable for personnel from sectors with existing general retention and disposal authorities that apply to all their business activities, ie. local government, universities and the public health sector.
Course outcomes
By the end of this course participants will be able to:
- use the 'DIRKS' methodology to develop a business classification scheme and identify recordkeeping requirements
- develop a retention and disposal authority
- adequately document retention decisions, and
- describe the process for obtaining approval of a functional retention and disposal authority.
Course content
This course comprises sessions on:
- principles of appraisal and disposal in the NSW public sector
- establishing context
- analysing business
- identifying recordkeeping requirements
- drafting a retention and disposal authority
- approval and beyond.
Related courses
The State Records training course Implementing a Retention and Disposal Authority teaches participants about how to use an existing retention and disposal authority and prepare records for transfer to State Records in accordance with the Section 29 Guidelines.
