The charred remains of an unidentified woman were found at Lane Cove following the Eight Hour Day holiday on Monday 1 October 1917. It was later claimed that Harry and Annie went on a picnic in the same area on Friday 28 September 1917. A man was seen by several witnesses in the area over the weekend in distress and holding his head in his hands. The remains were identified three years later as those of Annie Birkett.
