Copies of State archives

Microforms

Reading room visitors can access all the microform (microfilm and microfiche) copies of State archives that have been produced as part of our microfilming program. This includes the Archives Resources Kit (ARK) together with immigration, convict, gaol, police and later Colonial Secretary's records. See Archives in Brief 39 for a list of records in the ARK.

The majority of the microforms are on open access.

Copies of documents (CODs)

The collection of photocopied documents, referred to in our guides as a 'COD', or Copy of Document, are also available on open access in the reading room.

Digital copies

Digital copies of some State archives are available in the reading room. These include the parish and pastoral maps CDs produced as part of the Parish Map Project and the 1865 Trigonometrical Survey of Sydney.

Finding aids and other resources

You can access Archives Investigator and Archives in Brief (information leaflets), together with the other online resources including indexes and other guides and finding aids.

Indexes

You can also access a range of online indexes that have been made available to State Records for use solely in its reading rooms.

Other resources

Guides, finding aids, item lists in hard copy format, a number of government publications, reference books and maps are available on open access. These include the Historical Records of Australia, several editions of the Australian Encyclopaedia, early muster and census records and indexes that supplement our collection.

The reading room continues to be staffed by experienced archivists who can assist you in locating records relevant to your research.

National Archives of Australia (NAA)

Microfilm copies of the NAA shipping arrival lists into Sydney, 1923-66 are available in the Sydney Reading Room. There is a dedicated computer available to search the NAA database RecordSearch. Copies of selected NAA Fact Sheets and subject guides are also available for public use.
