Records

NRS 14401, NRS 14402, NRS 14403, Certificates of publicans' licences, 1830-61
(25 rolls of 35mm microfilm)
Reels 5049-5066, 1236-1242

The following records are included:

  • Butts of publicans' licences, Jun 1830- May 1849, NRS 14401 [4/61-83, 7/1501] on Reels 5049-5062 and 1236;
  • Certificates for publicans' licences, Jul 1853- Jun 1861, NRS 14403 [4/84-89 and 7/1502-1513] on Reels 5063-5066 and 1236-1242; and
  • Index to certificates for publicans' licences, 1853-55, NRS 14402 [4/90] on Reel 5063).

The Butts of publicans' licences (Reels 5049-5062 and 1236) contain details of the licence number, the date of issue, the name and address of the licensee and sign of the hotel, period covered by the licence and the amount of duty received, names of licensing justices, and date and place of meeting of justices authorising the issue of the licence.

The Certificates for publicans' licences (Reels 5063-5066 and 1236-1242) comprise certificates authorising the issue of Publicans' General Licences as well as some for Confectioners, Billiard, Night and Packet Licences. Each certificate contains the following information: name of district, date of justices' licensing meeting, name of proposed licence and type of licence issued, situation of Public House and sign, names and residence of sureties for licensee and signatures of justices. The dates recorded in the shelf list below are those for the periods for which licences were authorised by the magistrates rather than the dates of the certificates.

The Index to certificates for publican's licenses (Reel 5063) contains two separate indexes: an index of publicans, which is arranged strictly alphabetically by surnames within each of six parts, corresponding to the six volumes they index [4/84-89]; and an index of hotel names.

Indexes

For the Butts of publicans' licences alphabetical indexes to names of licensees are located at the beginning of all the volumes except [4/71] index in [4/70] and [4/73] index in [4/72]. These indexes have been filmed with the relevant volumes (Reels 5049-5062 and 1236).

The Index to certificates for publicans' licences (Reel 5063) which covers the period 1853 to 1855 and indexes volumes [4/84-89] of the Certificates for publicans' licences (on Reels 5063-5066) is the only other index available on these microfilms.

* In producing the Blue Books in the microfiche format, when more than one Blue Book for a particular year is held in State Records, the Blue Books were compared. The microfiche edition in these cases is often a composite from the extant volumes in order to produce as complete a set of returns as possible for each year.

Public Service Lists

NRS 1286, Public Service Lists, 1858-70
(13 microfiche)
Fiche 807-819

This series is a continuation of the relevant part of the previous series. From 1858 to 1861 the statistical Returns of the Colony (Blue Books), contained a section listing members of the Executive Council, Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly; officers of the Civil Establishments, by department; an Ecclesiastical Return arranged by church; a return of pensions paid; and a list of foreign consuls. This section has been extracted from the Returns of the Colony and filmed in this series under the title Public Service Lists. There is an index to the officers of the Civil Establishments only at the beginning of each year. From 1862 to 1870 the Public Service Lists were published separately from the statistical Returns of the Colony, with an alphabetical index to contents and an index to officers of the Civil Establishments included in the front of each annual volume. For these years lists for the following are generally included:

- Succession of Governors
- Ecclesiastical Establishments
- Parliaments (from 1863)
- Education
- Ministeries
- Pensions
- Executive Council
- Foreign Consuls
- Legislative Council
- Returning Officers
- Legislative Assembly
- Guardians of Minors (from 1864)
- Civil Establishments

For public servants, the office, the officer's name, date of appointment, by whom appointed, annual salary, and date of first appointment under the Colonial Government are recorded.
