#OnThisDay 18 June 1829 the new colony of Western Australia was proclaimed. The territory of Swan River was claimed for the British on 2 May 1829 when Captain Fremantle raised the Union Jack on South Head. The Colony was proclaimed and Perth was founded two months later. Captain James Stirling was the first Lieutenant Governor. Western Australia did not obtain self-government until 1890.
