#OnThisDay 21 October 1920 Eugenia Falleni was convicted of murdering her first 'wife'.
Falleni lived for many years as a man called Harry Crawford. In February 1913 Crawford married widow Annie Birkett and they opened a confectionery shop in Balmain. Annie disappeared after they went on a picnic together on 28 September 1917. A body was found near the picnic spot a few weeks later but was not identified for three years. By that time Harry had remarried.
Eugenia Falleni's arrest for murder in 1920 and the subsequent trial a few months later caused a sensation in Sydney.
