State archives are State records that the State Archives and Records Authority of New South Wales has control of under the State Records Act 1998. In practical terms, these are State records of continuing value that have been designated as required as State archives in an approved, current disposal authority (and correctly sentenced under that authority) and which are no longer in use for official purposes.
From 1st October 2018 all archive retrievals will be delivered digitally. If your agency is not an existing GRR web user there may be a small delay in servicing your request while we set up new accounts. We will be in contact with all requesting agencies to go over the new processes, including how to access the digital images. For more information about the changes and retrieval charges, please contact retrievearch@records.nsw.gov.au
Agencies can request retrieval of State archives in our custody via:
- Online - Archives Request Form
- Email - archives.retrieval@records.nsw.gov.au
- Telephone - (02) 9673 1788 and ask for Archives Retrieval
- Post
This option continues to be the most common approach for paper records, and may be suitable for certain types of electronic State archives. We have issued guidelines on transfer under section 29 of the State Records Act 1998 and public offices are required to comply with these requirements.
