This series is alternatively known as 'Court Books' and is a register of those tried on criminal charges in Sydney Courts (mainly the Court of Quarter Sessions) .
The first three calendars show: the gaol admission number of the prisoner, the date of the trial, the prisoner's name, age, ship on which he arrived in the colony, the commital details including the date and by whom, the date received into gaol, the offence, judge, verdit, date and remarks. The vessel of arrival was gradually omitted and the occupatuion of the prisoner was included. Subesquent volumes show: condition (such as ticket of leave, bond), when and where committed, type of jury (military or civil), charge, sentence, date of verdict, remarks (e.g. concerning alteration or commutation of sentences). Some volumes also contain memoranda and the name of the Commissioner, Attorney General and the Assistant Minister of Justice.
The volumes are arranged in chronological order by date of trial. They do not contain an index.
